History

1945

Dr. Manuel and Victoria Estacio arrived in Butuan as newlyweds back in November 26 1945.

They were a part of a government program that sent doctors and nurses to far-flung areas to provide much needed healthcare services.

They were to work at a provincial hospital. They decided to make Butuan their home.

1948

Dr. Manuel Estacio borrowed money from his father and built a small 5 bed “hospital”.

It was essentially a wooden shack with 5 beds and doubled as their first home.

He named it EMMANUEL HOSPITAL.

The hospital, located in the center of town, burned down twice and each time Dr. Manuel Estacio rebuilt it a little bigger and better.

On his fourth build, he moved on to an area along Montilla Boulevard, in Guingona Subdivision, and housed a 50 bed facility doing selected specialty procedures.

1969

A 100 bed hospital was established and located along Highway Km.2, then called Zamora St., now called JC Aquino Avenue.

At that time, it was the most advanced facility in the region.

1971

The Butuan Doctors’ College, then called Butuan Doctors’ Hospital School of Nursing was built beside the hospital.

It was the pioneering nursing school established in Northern Mindanao.

Ms. Paz De Leon was the first dean of BDH School of Nursing.

1972

Dr, Claudio B. Estacio and his wife, Dr. Therese Estacio returned to Butuan a few weeks before the start of martial law, after graduating from the University of Santo Tomas School of Medicine and passing the board exams.

1974

Dr. Claudio B. Estacio continues his post graduate studies in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the State University of New York, USA.

He started his internship at St. Clare’s Hospital in New York City and his residency training in Ob-Gyne at the State University of New York, Buffalo, NY, USA.

1979

Dr. Claudio Estacio returns to the Philippines with his family and started his practice as Obstetrics and Gynecolog.

1980

When logging companies closed, the hospital had less and less patients, as the location was too far from the main city center. Operations were kept at 50 beds.

Dr. Claudio Estacio found it difficult to continue and expand the services of Butuan Doctors’ Hospital. It was difficult to attract good doctors or specialties to support or partner with.

He convinced them to come by improving the hospitals’ equipment or facility to allow them to practice.

Early 90’s

Dr. Claudio Estacio opened  an outpatient facility in the downtown area called Butuan Polyclinic along with a group of doctors from hospital to allow them to hold office closer to the city center.

Following tradition, Dr. Claudio Estacio and Dr. Therese Estacio, he as a hospital director and she as the hospital administrator, worked together to weather the difficult times.

1998

Butuan Doctors’ Hospital developed its computerized information system

1999

Butuan Doctors’ Hospital opened a Dialysis center

2004

A new 3-storey building was built to house the main lobby and administrative offices. The Center of Medical Arts was developed to house the different specialty centers and to serve the rapidly growing ambulatory service.

New fully equipped private hospital rooms were made available.

2011

Dr. Claudio Estacio appointed Dr. Maria Chiara Estacio as the hospital administrator.

2012

The hospital upgraded to a 16 slice CT-Scan.

Butuan Doctors’ Hospital also acquired a Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) for the radiology department which enabled transmitting images and clinically relevant reports more promptly.

2017

A new hospital building was erected, a 4-storey structure which provided space for:

  • Additional clinics, hear station, neuro-center, chemo and blood transfusion unit, day surgery unit, and a PT/Rehab unit.
  • A large Information Technology Unit with a secure server room and CCTV monitoring system
  • A dengue care unit and pediatric ICU
  • A 150-person capacity convention hall
  • Relocating offices and meeting rooms
  • More private rooms
  • A chapel and an open courtyard

It allowed BDH to increase the bed capacity to 150.

2018

A 0.35T Open Bore MRI was installed, the first ever in the region.
